  • SCUTTLE HOLE ROAD

    BIO:

I was born in 1978 in Berkeley, California, and raised among the open spaces and country roads of East Hampton, New York, on Long Island’s East End. For most of my life, I called that area home, spending countless hours driving the flat landscapes, backroads, and coastal stretches in my pickup truck—absorbing the endless horizons, utility poles slicing the sky, and the subtle shifts of light at dawn and dusk. Those drives still fuel everything I create. After years on the East End, I’ve relocated my studio to Equinunk PA (with some time in Western Massachusetts along the way). Here, the quieter rural roads and changing seasons continue to inspire new series—always chasing that feeling of movement, transition, and the quiet magic between man-made lines and natural vastness. My work has been represented by galleries like the Tambaran 2 Gallery (NYC) , Sebastian Foster Gallery (Austin TX), Silas Marder Gallery (Bridgehampton NY) and Roman Fine Art (East Hamptons NY), featured in publications, private collections, and collaborations (from fabric patterns with Windham Fabrics to puzzles and more). With over 84,000 followers on Instagram (@granthaffner) I share the process — from sketches on the road to final neon-infused layers.

    ARTIST STATEMENT

My paintings explore memory, transition, movement, and the deep, biological connection between humans and the natural world. Through linear, dreamlike landscapes, I elevate the often-overlooked experience of road travel into meditations on light, emotion, and solitude. I draw endless inspiration from sunrise drives along quiet country roads, waterways, and highways—those straight lines of asphalt, power poles marching into the distance, and the calm expanse of fields or water. I exaggerate these elements with bold, candy-like, often neon or solarized colors to capture both tranquility and the rhythm of speed. The utility poles and open roads aren’t just motifs; they pull viewers into a nostalgic, universal American scene—evoking childhood memories while reminding us that no two sunrises are ever the same. Whenever possible, I stop and sit in the silence, watching monumental yet subtle changes in light from morning to night. Through layered oil techniques—glazes for luminous depth, bold accents for energy—I aim to evoke a bodily response: the warmth of dawn on skin, the pull of forward motion, the quiet escape of being alone behind the wheel. My goal is simple yet profound: to make you feel the flow of the road, remember the white and yellow lines stretching ahead, and reconnect with the overlooked beauty all around us.

    MY PROCESS

I work primarily in Acrylics on wood panel, building depth with multiple layers to create glowing, atmospheric light using lines and stripes. Neon hues along with carefully color mixing and high-contrast accents create my style that suggest speed and electricity in otherwise serene scenes. Many pieces start from reference photos snapped during drives—then evolve in the studio with added imagination and emotion. I also create limited edition prints (archival, signed/numbered), textiles, and merch to make the work more accessible.
